Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to read and use the data in this story — whether you use a keyboard, a screen reader, screen magnification or a slow connection.
Our target
This website is designed to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA in both the Thai and English editions. Current status: partially conformant, because of the limitations listed below.
What we have done
- Everything works with a keyboard, with a “Skip to main content” link and clearly visible focus outlines.
- Pages use proper headings and landmarks, with a single main heading per page.
- Every chart is an SVG with a text summary and a data table you can open (“View data table”).
- Colour is never the only cue: statuses and categories always carry a label or symbol, and text meets the 4.5:1 contrast ratio.
- We respect your system’s “reduce motion” setting: animations stop and numbers show their final values straight away. Auto-playing animations have a pause button.
- On mobile, buttons and links have touch targets of at least 44 × 44 pixels, and text can be enlarged to 200% without horizontal scrolling.
- Every field on the contact form has a label, and errors are announced as text linked to the field.
- The page language (
lang) is set so screen readers pronounce Thai and English correctly.
Known limitations
- The interactive map has limited screen-reader support. The map page therefore offers a district list and data table as an alternative, and the same datasets can be downloaded from Data & sources.
- The fire-season scrollytelling chapter changes visuals as you scroll. All of its content can be read in order without the animation.
- Downloadable files (PDF, PPTX, infographic images) have not all been checked for accessibility yet [to be checked before publication]. Key text in images is also available on the web pages.
- Third-party documents we reference may not meet accessibility standards; this is outside our control.
- Current illustrations are AI-generated and treated as decorative (no alt text). When they are replaced with real photography, meaningful descriptions will be added.
How we tested
We tested with a keyboard, automated checkers and screen readers [NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, TalkBack on Android] at screen widths from 360 to 1440 pixels. [External audit results.]
